Seeing your body as something different to what it is, either seeing yourself as over or underweight when in reality it probably isn't the case.

A persistent, distorted view of one's own body shape and size. It can be fixated on a certain part of the body, or extend to the entire body. Chronic "mirror checking" is something often experienced by those with BDD. My experience with body dysmorphia is akin the living in a carnival mirror maze.

For me, I experienced (and continue to do so) body dysmorphia due to emotional trauma growing up with an abusive mother. She would constantly put me on diets and obsess over any blemishes on my skin. I still can't see myself as anything but grotesquely overweight despite the input from doctors and professionals to the contrary. I literally cannot understand how they see me as thin when i have been so completely inundated with the lesson that i am horribly fat and in need of restrictions.

Body dysmorphia is when a person obsess over something that they think is a flaw about them. For example this could be that the person believes that their thighs are to big so they don't wear shorts and only think about how bug their thighs are.
