Distraction can help. Sometimes emotional eating is just bored eating! For me, doing something that I can't do while eating is the way to go. Physical activity, playing a video game, taking a drive... anything that keeps your body and hands busy!

It is very difficult to control our eating habits, especially when we are feeling strong emotions. Be it happiness, sadness or anger sometimes all we want to do is eat! A good thing that has helped me was to write on my hand "do I really need this" before a meal, and I find I make more conscious choices about what I eat. Of course I don't deprive myself of everything, as eating is a blessing! But I do make more knowledgeable decisions with that little reminder! It is also good to focus our attention on something else, like jogging or simply reading a good book, but that is easier said than done!
