In my opinion, and extreme diet is a physical thing. Dieting is about wanting to be healthy or slimmer, whereas an eating disorder is about control and how you feel. No-one on here can diagnose an eating disorder, but if you're experiencing negative thoughts about your body and feel the need to excessively control your eating habits (to the point where it's unhealthy) you may want to speak to your doctor :)

From my understanding, dieting turns into an eating disorder when the diet turns into a central priority in one's life. When someone is at the point that they are thinking about food constantly throughout the day, their diet has evolved into an eating disorder.

A diet generally becomes an eating disorder when it becomes unhealthy and you feel as though it controls you. I found a great example of the different thought patterns between someone who is on a diet and someone who has an eating disorder which you may find helpful :) diet: I shouldn't really eat that I may feel guilty eating disorder: I literally cannot put that into my mouth, I'm so anxious diet: I want a slimmer figure eating disorder: I want to count my ribs diet: I use exercise to feel good about myself and it helps me achieve my goals eating disorder: I use exercise as a means of purging or to punish myself diet: I follow a meal plan but otherwise I live a normal life eating disorder: Food controls me. It is at the centre of my every thought This is just a few examples but I hope this helps you with understanding the differences between extreme dieting and an eating disorder :)

When you constantly think about losing weight and if you suddenly gain one pound (which can be quite normal), you become angry and frustrated, which will lead you to eat less the next day.

Extreme diet becomes an eating disorder when the diet or restriction of energy intake leads to a significantly low body weight, accompanied by an intense fear of gaining weight, a persistent behavior that interferes with weight gain and a persistent lack of recognition of the seriousness of the current low body weight.

Extreme diets are usually not healthy, but you can try them without them becoming eating disorders. If these diets become a habit, and you find yourself doing them on a regular basis (or daily), then that diet has become an eating disorder and you should consult a medical professional.

In my opinion, it becomes an eating disorder when you become obsessed with it and feel like you are starting to lose control. You feel like you HAVE to do anything to lose weight, including not eating or throwing up.

Extreme diets are unhealthy in their own way, but aren't necessarily a mental health issue until the person with the extreme diet is no longer in control of their actions. They fixate on food and their body shape and diet regimen are disproportionately linked to their self-esteem. They are unable to break their diet without feeling serious psychological strain.

Possibly the best way to understand this is to see a doctor. An eating disorder is categorised by a disordered form of eating normally regarded as an obsession with how the body looks and feels - as well as the way we view ourselves. It's categorised by an unusual and often harmful way of behaving towards food and the body.
