This maybe due to depression; if so, seek medical attention. But if you wake up on occasion and feel sad, think about all the good things in your life! Get out that day and enjoy a park or go shopping if you can afford to do so, visit a friend or volunteer.

I believe we sometimes wake up feeling down because we immediately begin to think of the upcoming day in a negative light. We may see "I need to go to school" or "I need to go to work", and feel immediately exhausted. But taking things in short bursts of time may be helpful. See what you can do for yourself in a short time, such as 20 minutes, and this will help to get out of bed and fight through the initial sadness.

It depends on your sleep cycles and dreams. Even though you may not remember a dream that made you sad, your brain still feels the emotion. A lack of sleep could also be the cause.
