Sometimes we may wake up feeling sad. This could be due to a troubling dream. Dreams are our subconscious mind's way of working through complex issues. Our mind may have been hard at work during our sleep to help us deal with some past or current conflict that we have not had time, or allowed time to deal with during our waking hours. The waking sadness could also be due to some small, seemingly harmless event such as not saying goodnight to your child or your spouse before going to sleep. If you're someone who analyzes your actions, this sadness can feel persistent and troubling to you. You may struggle to let go of these sad thoughts because the thought of not saying goodnight is repeating over and over again in your mind, Even something as simple as feeling anger toward a pet and not patting it on the head to say you were sorry for having those feelings. We would not equate either of these with our sadness because they do not seem important or significant enough to warrant being sad about; however, some individuals do not like leaving things unresolved before going to bed.

Whilst there can be a biological component to this. In most cases we don't "wake up" feeling sad - as that implies we all have no control over how we feel and that it just happens. Instead it arises from the conscious thoughts you have after you've woken up e.g. immediately thinking about a past trauma, or ruminating over something you have to do that day. For me its immediately assessing my health and assuming I'm ill (because honestly who DOES feel well right after waking up?). Its natural to do this, but essential to be aware of it and remember that your thoughts aren't facts - and your past doesn't determine your present - as its through challenging these thoughts that we can prevent immediate feelings of sadness from impacting our day.
