They feel alone, and that other people are mocking them behind their backs. It isn't fun to feel like that... and mostly because people are concerned and it just makes them feel like everyone's fake.

In my personal experience when I was going through a tough time, I pushed everyone away to see who would make the effort to want to be with me. I also didn't want the hurt of being left so I thought that if I pushed everyone away first they wouldn't get the chance to leave me. Depression makes you insecure and makes you feel like you aren't good enough and that's why loved ones get pushed away.

Sometimes those who are depressed are ashamed that they feel like they do and that they can't do "normal things" like doing laundry and cleaning up after themselves. They don't want anyone to see them in a moment of weakness.

The overwhelming sense of self-loathing, failure, and irritation makes even communicating with the people you're closest to a hardship. I find myself too tired to even explain how I'm feeling, which makes them sad and confused. Some, eventually, give up trying.

Sometimes a way to deal with depression is to push away the people you love because you don't want to hurt them. You don't want them to feel the same way that you do so you push them away in fear that maybe your depression might rub off on them.

Some of them may feel that they will let down their loved ones. Some feel like their lives are meaningles and not important or significant enough to have a role in someone elses life. If they are suicidal, they might push people away to prevent them from grieving.

They do not want to remain a burden to a loved one. As someone who has been depressed, there is a mindset that your loved ones are sick of you or that you are burdening them with your depression.

Depressed people often push loved ones away because they don't want to hurt them, they're struggling so hard with themselves and all they need is a compassionate shoulder to lean on, they do not want to hurt others by telling them about their own problems
