Depression is a very nasty disease. It's not easily treatable and has a huge stigma surronding it. Depression is the only disease with a terminal outcome that we look down upon. We tell people it's not the bad and they just need to get out when they do reach out for help- which only makes them feel worse. The stigma is why they push people away, not to mention this disease makes one feel they're not worth anyone's time.

You believe everyone else thinks you are as worthless as you feel for yourself so best thing is to push them away before they can hurt you.

This is because they think they don't deserve being loved when in depression hence push them away again and again.

Sometimes they feel that if people really do love them, they won't be pushy or overbearing, but they won't disappear either. They'll stick around and just be there. When depressed people push others away, they're weeding out their fake friends.

Depression provokes a lot of self-depreciation, you tend to think that you are not worthy of the help of your loved ones, that you're not interesting enough, that you might bother people, ... It's hard to understand for your loved ones as they deeply care for you, but sometimes you have to insist to be there for the depressed people, as all they require is a friendly being near them, ready to listen to them and understand them :)

People who are depressed sometimes don't feel worthy of affection and love or they just do not have the energy for human interactions and don't want to disappoint, make life easier for others by cutting themselves out. That is an all or nothing kind of thinking, that also is taking away the possibility for loved ones to choose for themselves who are worthy of their time.
Often people think that by cutting themselves off they make life of their loved ones easier. This is not the case, because often the loved ones worry. Also it can hinder healing for the depressed person, since they are cutting themselves off important ressources to be able to heal/get better.

Some wouldn't want their saddness and problems to affect other people's life and happiness. Forgetting that by pushing them away , they hurt the people that love them and themselves even more.

Sometimes people with depression feel like they're bringing the people around them down too. Or sometimes they don't want to talk to anyone because they're afraid their loved ones will notice the change in them and they're not ready to talk about it. Other times the condition itself drives sufferers into isolation when they don't have the motivation to go out. In my experience it's predominantly that people have to put on a brave face around loved ones and they just can't pretend everything's alright anymore.

I believe that depression can dramatically lower our self esteem and confidence. As a result it can make someone feel worthless and a burden to those around them. In these moment its always good to flip the situation...if someone you loved was hurting would you consider them a burden?
