Usually I find that the listeners here would refrain from advice, which is a good thing. At the same time, the way I proceed is that I do not give advice, but suggestions. The difference is that I only try and suggest the person of what options they have in their current circumstance. I also try and tell people that it is only MY OPINION and the only thing I can really ever do is try to make them smile by telling some cheesy joke (if the chat has died down and become less serious, its good to break the tension) or I just listen and let them vent :)
