Sometimes when you're down your thoughts will block you from seeing the good in yourself, and keep you from doing what would make you happy. The best way to break free is to start reminding of all the beautiful positive things that surround you. Start with the simple things, and eventually you will feel better!

Sometimes it seems like you'll just be down again, so what's the point in trying to cheer yourself up. I know I feel like i'd rather be down than fail at cheering myself up, It would be yet another failure that I couldn't handle. Also sometimes you want people to know how you feel without having to tell them and if you actively try and make yourself feel better then they won't know.

For me, part of being depressed/down is that I really CAN'T seem to do anything to make myself feel better! I know what things will help, but part (for me) the hardest part of depression is that it makes it so I can't get myself to use those great coping skills. To the outside, it must just look like I purposefully sit back and make myself feel worse and worse, but I can't always stop. Sometimes what I try to do is give myself permission to "fail." To say, "okay, I can't do X, Y, Z today, but maybe I can take just 5 minutes to do _______." OR, I make a plan to do one little thing to get myself started better the next day. I've found that a LITTLE bit of activity leads to more activity, so I try to convince myself first thing in the morning to do one little thing, no matter how little it is. That usually helps me to do better things later in the day, but even if it doesn't I try to celebrate whatever little thing I was able to get done!

When you are feeling really down, it is often easier to just continue to stay down than to put in the effort to make yourself feel better. A symptom of depression or feeling down is loss of motivation and low energy, so it is hard to bring yourself to do anything. Another symptom is a sense of hopelessness. If you lose hope, you will have no motivation to make yourself feel better. It is really difficult to do, but with practice you can learn how to consciously choose to make yourself feel better.

It's hard to take care of yourself when you feel like you aren't worth the care. This is a common depression problem. It can be combated by asking someone who cares about you to help you take care of yourself.

When I felt this way, I literally had to move myself to do something to make myself feel better. One step at a time. Starting small and building up. I was so tired of being tired all the time! It was like I could look at myself being depressed and angry, and I found a way to use that anger to fuel myself into making a change.

I get stuck in a vibration and it becomes a comfortable habit. Plus change of any sort can be scary. It requires risk of perceived failure if what I am hoping for does not happen.

Sometimes we feel the need to unconsciously punish ourselves. Even when we don't deserve it. I don't know if you suffer from depression or any other mental illness or not but they also have a tendency to make you feel lazy and unwilling to take care and love yourself. The most important thing to do is just make small steps to for self-care, whether it's just by telling yourself kind things, keeping a gratitude journal, a diary, taking a walk, talking to a friend, listening to your favorite song, watching your favorite movie, taking a hot shower, taking deep breaths, meditating, taking a nap, eating healthy or indulging in your favorite foods etc. Good luck!! xx
