Antidepressants are the most commonly prescribed psychiatric medications. The most common medications among these come from a class of drugs known as SSRIs. Examples would include Sertraline (Zoloft) and Paroxetine (Paxil). Most patients with depressive disorders respond well to this medication. For those who do not, there are other classes of drugs like MAOIs and the latest class to be introduced, known as SNRIs. Examples of this include Venlafaxine. These usually work by inhibiting the reuptake of serotonin or norepinephrine, or both (as the name suggests). Most medications work best when also combined with an effective therapy program so it is recommended that patients talk to their doctors to find the best treatment option for themselves.
