Sadness is not caused by one overarching thing. Sometimes, it can be due to the loss of something or the realization of something. There is no one thing that can be pinpointed for sadness. The only thing that we truly know is that sadness exists. And it is important for us to know that and accept that sadness is just as important of a feeling as happiness. Being sad isn't the end of the world just like being happy isn't the root of all the problems in the universe. Being sad will happen and it's important to identify the cause (which is different for all) and accept the fact that you are feeling something.

Sadness can come from all kinds of situations. Sometimes it's from a loss. Other times it's when our expectations exceed our reality. It can even be just a passing mood. Sadness isn't enjoyable, but it does provide a necessary contrast to joy; it can teach us appreciation and gratitude.

Many things make a person sad. The biggest reason I believe is anxiety/stress. Then there is guilt/regret. By calming down and not giving up, one can overcome whatever's troubling him/her.
