There are a range of treatments that are accessible through your local doctors. One possible treatment is talk therapy. In this therapy, you will meet frequently with a therapist who will tailor the therapy based on your symptoms and what you a struggling with. Some courses of talk therapy are intense and last around 6 weeks, for example cognitive behavioural therapy. Others can go on for months or years, depending on how severe and persistent your symptoms are. Talk therapy can even be accessed here on the 7Cups site. Talk therapy may be done on an individual basis, in a group or with the family.
Alongside talk therapy, many individuals will take a form of medication. Antidepressants are usually prescribed by a doctor, who will monitor your symptoms and side effects of the medication. Based on this, they may prescribe an alternative medication, or alter the dosage. It is important that if you are prescribed medication that you take it as prescribed to ensure the effect of the medication can be measured accurately.
In cases of enduring and intense depression, some individuals may be considered for brain stimulation such as Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS).
Some self help techniques may also be useful for helping you through depression. Learning mindfulness and practising healthy every day habits can help break you out of the depression cycle.
Remember that there is no miracle cure for depression and finding something that works for you and is sustainable may take a while. Being persistent and having faith in yourself, the health professionals helping you and those who support you will be key to treatment. Be kind to yourself and give yourself time to heal.
