Sometimes when we check-in with a depressed loved one by asking how they are or about their day, they can find it very difficult to answer. Perhaps you can try by sharing some of your daily news with your friend. While your friend may be feeling that they do not want to go out and socialise, they may appreciate knowing you have not forgotten them. By doing this you are also alleviating them of the decision of what to say when you ask how they are doing. Remember to take care of yourself too. If your friend is not receiving counselling, I encourage you to speak to your friend about the benefits they could get from it. Often, having a person who is professionally bound to keeping confidentiality, can be a source of great support to someone who is going through depression. Depression can also be confusing and having a professional who can help demystify depression can also be a source of comfort. I wish you all the best.
