Depression is a very complex mental illness, this seems like a very extreme case of depression. I myself get like this, and I haven't gotten help for it, but it just get's worse, and he needs to know it's okay to not be able to do it on his own. If I were to get an intervention when these episodes happen, I would probably be on the road to happiness right now. I know you aren't his mom or anything, but please make sure if you think he needs extra help, let someone know.

No this is not usual and he should try and get help because isolating people and refusing help when you are depressed could lead on to more harmful activities. Consult our depression and mental health guide for any more information. If you are feeling upset about the break up, don't blame it on him mental health can make you do things you normally wouldn't do. I have borderline personality disorder and feel like I need to constantly break up relationships so I can not hurt them and they can not hurt me. This may be what he is doing.
