Even for people who became depressed later, it's hard to remember, but I would say it's just the general concept of enjoying stuff. People will still get sad/desperate/unmotivated/numb at times, but only in response to an event, not as a general state. And over all, they just enjoy stuff, they get high hopes. they don't dread waking up etc.

Even though I have been diagnosed as depressed, my symptoms are very well managed by medications prescribed by my doctor. The feeling is like being freed from something inside yourself. For me the feelings of apathy and nonchalant behavior that made me so frustrated with myself have faded away. I can pride myself in my work, focus, have supportive relationships, and attain my goals with less resistance from the chemical imbalance in my brain. Not having depression does not mean you never feel sad. Things will still bother you, cause you pain, and make you worry. But you know that those feelings will not last forever.
