Some people describe depression as “living in a black hole†or having a feeling of impending doom, not just being "sad". There can be feelings of exhaust, or not wanting to move forward with life. Sometimes you feel as if there is nothing inside you. (But remember, these feelings do fade)

Like an invisible hand clutching at your throat. Also like a dark cloud, raining on your happiness. Like invisible people tearing you to bits. Making you become glass. Then they shatter you... and everything is gone.

I would describe depression as that negative, constantly complaining friend in your life -- the one that at first you thought you could tolerate and welcome, but throughout time, you realize it's just getting harder and harder to be around them, because their energy is just so bad. Depression is then that negative friend that you need to let go of, that you need to remind them there are good things in life, that you have to appreciate the beauty of life. It's hard to do so all the time, but it is possible. Sometimes you just have to let go of old friends and move on; you have to realize what's best for your own interest and health.
