I struggled with this for quite some time. I still do. Try your best to engage your mind in the physical. Feel a fabric and really think about it, feel the weight of gravity on your body. In my opinion, most of the time, what happens physically is much more enticing to the senses than mental.

The best prevention in keeping your mind away from negative thoughts is by careful and focused conditioning. For example, sublimation could be one effective method. Doing something that peak your interest such as playing basketball, answering a crossword puzzle, or even sharing your quality time with true, good friends could ease those negative vibes step by step and in turn, it would be replaced with some optimism.

When you start having bad thought, write each one on a paper. Then you have to annotate one possitive thought for each negative one. Try to look for the possitive side of every bad thought.
The objetive is transform little by little this type of thoughts in possitive. By tthe you will can make this without writing in a paper :)
