Getting rid of it seems to be a real possibility. There was a time when I wasn't depressed and actively tried to make things better for myself. It's just thoughts. Thoughts are transient. If they are of some pattern this day, they will be of some other pattern on a different day. The book 'Happiness' by Matthieu Ricard speaks about 'state of being' and that sounds reasonable.

Yes. It takes time and a lot of effort and often professional help, but it is definitely possible. The dark times you've gone through will be a part of you and might still affect you later in life, but it is possible to get up even when you've hit rock bottom and find happiness again.
