There are many types of depression, some situational, some in brain chemistry, some because of thought distortions or inaccurate beliefs, and sometimes it's a symptom of other health problems. Getting rid of it usually entails a lot of work for the one suffering from depression and even if it's not mostly alleviated, you can learn a number of coping skills. If it's persistent or disruptive in your life, you should consider seeking professional help.

You can get rid of specific episodes of it, but if you're especially susceptible to it, it will probably return at some point. You can reduce the frequency and severity, though, and make sure you have good supports and coping measures ready for when it happens again.

I personally don't think anyone can be 'rid' of a mental illness such as depression, but over time individuals can learn to cope and handle their depression and they symptoms it brings, and enjoy daily life in general.

Yes! I think depression is a sign that something in your life needs to change. By figuring out which life factors are contributing to your depression, you can work towards fixing those in order to improve your depression. Making lifestyle changes such as exercising more, eating a healthy diet, and improving your sleep schedule helps immensely! However, often the causes of depression are deeper than that, such as loneliness and living in a poor environment. Dealing with past trauma and other disorders can also contribute to depression extremely. That's why it is important to keep reaching out for support if you are stuck in depression. If you do not have family and friends that can help you, reaching out to a hotline or a professional like a therapist is truly important to recovering.

You can most definitely overcome depression. It takes a lot of hard work but it is most defiantly possible. You will need a strong support group and people who are willing to help you get through these rough times. It does not disappear overnight, and though it seems like it WILL NEVER GET BETTER, IT WILL!
