It can be very challenging to stop thinking about the dark thoughts you're having, and I applaud you for wanting to take steps to becoming happier. You can try and come up with a list of pleasant activities that you can try when you're ruminating and having all those dark thoughts. Apart from that, another way to go about this is to confront these thoughts. Try writing down all the dark thoughts you're having on a sheet of paper. Rate how much you believe in them on a 10- point scale, then evaluate each of them. Write down the evidence for and against those beliefs, and then rate it again, on the same scale you used earlier. All the best!

You may need to talk to a psychiatrist. If you feel really depressed, they may be able to prescribe you meds that can help. No matter what happens though, just remember that you make your own happiness, so if your feeling bad, try your best to go and have fun. Don't dwell on things that make you upset, it won't benefit you at all.

I remember the small things that make me happy. Like the smell of an old book, or walking barefoot through grass in the early morning. Soon the small things seem like my world and slowly feel better. A smile slowly lifts and I am able to think more clearly.

Do what makes you feel happy. When every time I feel bad, I go to the gym to work on my muscle. This will make me focus on gaining muscles more than thinking about bad things.

I force myself to think and say positive things. Every day tell yourself that you are beautiful, strong, capable and happy. Even if you don't believe it straight away.

Negative thinking is definitely one of the biggest problems a lot of us suffer from. Ironically, the more you try to rationalize it, the more you tend to only think about it and in turn become more negative. It’s a crazy, vicious cycle. That’s why I think it’s good to simply listen, absorb and be inspired by what the world can offer you. That’s how you’d be blessed with different insights all together.

Write down 3 good things that happened yesterday or within the last week and dwell on them. Write about them. Just like you would about something depressing.

Find a healthy distraction or an outlet that you can turn to when you're thinking bad thoughts. In therapy, I learned to make a box full of everything that makes me happy! (I had quite a bit of chocolate in there)

by STOPPING. Find something to do. Something that will take your mind off yourself. Perhaps volunteer or offer to sweep an elderly persons front path, go swimming or walking and ensure you say hello to people you pass even if they do not respond. Get your mind busy on another subject
