In my experience. If you are lazy you WANT to sit around and do something, like take a nap, or watch TV, or play video games. If you are depressed, however, you aren't satisfied doing anything. Going out doesn't make you happy, but neither does staying in. Often times depressed people just end up sitting and doing nothing or sleeping because they have no desire whatsoever to do anything.

Long-term feelings are usually a wake-up call to something else than "simply laziness and lack of motivation".

I think there is quite a large difference of being apathetic because you are lazy and when you're depressed. I think that when you are depressed, you have a physically heavy feeling on your mind, making it difficult to want to do anything. A lot of depressed people have trouble actually getting out of bed because of that heavy feeling. You can feel tired and lethargic, thus making you not want to do anything. If you're being lazy, I guess you feel mentally well and you don't have that heavy feeling.

Laziness is a value judgment. However, some people have little desire to do things and they're happy that way. Others do not. If you are unhappy with the way your life is, lack of motivation can be one of many signs of depression.

There are lots of other factors to consider when looking at depression, if you are displaying other symptoms of it, you are most likely depressed rather than lazy.

No motivation comes with depression. Think about how long you've felt unmotivated. Have you felt unmotivated for a long time now? Or just since you started feeling sad? Don't stress about it too much either. It's okay to feel unmotivated because you're depressed. You just have to push through it, or a better way to say it, walk through it.
