You search for your local volunteer website like here we have volunteer Scotland. Needless to say, you can also volunteer here as a Listener. Depending upon your computing skills, you can help by maintaining and/or creating social media pages such as Facebook and Twitter for start-up companies. They look for people like that all the time or at least they do so here and it gives you a reference as well as some experience. Employers also like to see that you keep busy so even although it might not be relevant to the job you might be applying for, if you have very little to put on your curriculum vitae, you can put that down to show you keep busy, you're not lazy and you're willing to do even the smallest of tasks that perhaps some people don't want to be doing. You could also do some research work; seems to be a lot of requests for that. Doing various online duties for companies such as sending out really important emails to members. Unless you're looking for a reference, sometimes the easiest volunteer work to look for is to simply give your services. We do it without knowing such as when we reply to someone's query on a forum about how to fix a problem or give them some suggestions; sometimes simply answering a question and knowing you've helped or tried to help someone is enough satisfaction from some such as myself. It really all depends on what you look for but perhaps you should search for "work from home" volunteer work but be careful; every company you come across, do your research and make sure they are legitimate. I would start off by finding your local volunteer website though and check the websites reputation before using it. That's how I found volunteer Scotland. Hope this helps.

Becoming a listener is a great way to do that, there are also other options some people volunteer on online suicide hotlines, or sites for specific concerns eg. Parenting worries if this is an area they have had experience with before, ifs worth doing a Google search and finding out an area that you might be interested and then contacting the site and telling them that you would like to/working out the process.
