You can know whether or not you are really depressed based on the symptoms. Did the sadness come suddenly or after an event? Depression usually doesn't have a cause.

Depression is often characterized by often feeling of sadness. Dark, negative thoughts seem to never leave your mind. You can not eat or you eat too much. Also, sleep is hard to achieve or you are waking up through the night. If depression is more developed you find little joy in things you used to love.
