Hello there :).
Well, if you are having ups and downs in life, that is normal, that's a part of everyone's life....
However, if sadness, despair and emptiness won't go away then you probably have a type of depression.
And yes... it doesn't go away, you can't just sleep it over or wake up completely happy, remaining that for the rest of the day like you normally can. It's constantly there, for months, sometimes even years... Of course there are depression tests and if you think you may have depression from what I've described, it may be a good idea to visit a proffesional.
Hope I helped,
Best regards,with respect,
Corvius

Always seeing a professional can help with this. A good rule of thumb is if it affects your quality of life then there may be an issue that the professional can help you with. Also if nothing else has changed as far as your eating, sleeping, or other activities and habits then checking with a professional can help rule out any physiological medical related issues.

Look at what you do on a daily basis or you interests and when you start losing interest in things you used to do. For me I used to draw, play the clarinet, write poetry, lastly is getting out of bed.

The best way is to seek professional help. Online tests and research aren't meant for diagnosis by any means, so I definitely recommend that if you suspect you're depressed, a professional can diagnose and help you through it.

Right now, the only way to be officially diagnosed with depression is to see a mental health professional.

You will only know for sure if you speak with a licensed doctor or psychologist. Self-diagnosing is often incorrect.

you can take some tests online, but they are not 100 % true. But start doing that and then you can go to your doctor and tell how you feel and tell about the test too

If you are having symptoms of depression, you need to go and see your local GP or doctor, and explain your systems and concerns. Then, he can provide you with support, help, they may do assessments to see if you have depression, and if you do you may be refereed to counselling or you may be put on depression medication. Here at 7cupsoftea, it is not up to us to determine whether or not you have depression, as none of us are trained in the medical world, and if we are that's not our job on 7cupsoftea.
I would highly recommend you visit your local GP or doctor.

The only way is to consult with a physician on the matter. The physician will get some information from you, and determine whether or not you should be diagnosed with depression or not.
