The best thing to do is watch over them. Be there for them always. Support them and help them get right back on their feet. And best of all, try to make them smile and laugh. :)

you can help them by listening to them. make a link between you two in which you are empathic with them and get to know how they feel. most of the times depression comes with loneliness, and being there to listen can help a lot.

Depression is sadness that lasts longer and it affects people's ability to everyday things. Some things that should help are: sleeping and getting up on time (getting sunlight helps with mood), exercising as it releases dopamine in the brain and it improves the mood, many people pray and/or meditate for relaxation and peace of mind, depressed people can eat proper foods which are high in vitamins and minerals (fruits and vegetables), they do journal writing, they should also reflect on their thinking and make sure it it not negative. Depressed people tend to hold on negative thoughts and exaggerate it, they should watch out for that. One good book on the topic of depression is David D Burn's "Feeling Good." They can talk to their loved ones and do things which give them peace of mind. If there's a problem such as joblessness they should try to resolve the issue. Also, if possible they can go in for counseling if it is severely affecting their quality of life.

Talk to them. Try to understand what they're saying and coming from. People with depression sometimes suffer with random sadness. Dont pressure them, calmly ask them about it and be patient. :)

People with depression might think that it is a conscious choice to be happy or sad, but that isn't always true. I find it important to make people with depression know they didn't choose how they feel. I then talk to them and try to help them see what a great person they are!
