Okay maybe you don’t tell them straight away, I usually don’t, though I feel like they need to know about me in case I ever get in a bad way. Just so they are prepared for it - if I suddenly locked myself in my room all day, not eating or drinking, people would probably find me pretty weird if they didn’t know I had a mental illness.

To the ones you trust, yes. otherwise, refrain from people who you feel bring negativity. All some people can do is judge you and put you down. Do not, EVER, let anyone put you down.

I think that it's a personal matter so it's really up to you. For instance, If you think it will make you feel more comfortable around people then go for it, if not then don't.

No, you absolutely do not need to tell people that you're depressed. Of course, it can absolutely help to reach out to someone who you trust and who cares about you, but you by no means need to tell people. It's about what makes you comfortable.

Honestly, I can not tell you based on this question alone if you should or should not. Choosing to tell people about your depression should happen on your own time in your own way. If you find it helps, then totally do it. If it makes you really uncomfortable, then you don't have to. :)
