It will certainly make things easier for you. Having a professional who knows what they are doing and who have health with the problem you are facing multiple times, gives you a validation sort of thing that you are in right hands and that you are taken care of.
Otherwise, there are a lot of books or helpline numbers or sites like 7 Cups where we have active listeners who are certified (Verified) as well, who are willing to talk to you anytime you like as they have an open/free service 24/7.
Everyone has a different way of treating depression, you just have to find yours. Take Care!

All you need to do is what you feel you need. If seeing a therapist is something you feel will help your depression, then do it. But if you don't feel comfortable doing it, and you feel that you can help yourself, then don't do it.
Although I can attest for how beneficial a therapist is- especially for cases like depression- it isn't always a guarantee that it will help since there are so many variables.
If you are unsure of what to do, perhaps start by reaching out to one of the listeners on this site? From there on, you can see how you like the therapy environment :)

"Need" is a strong word. Will it help? absolutely.
Depression is a nasty condition. It makes you feel awful, and it robs you of the energy and motivation to do the things that will help you feel better. It is really hard to beat depression alone. Some people can do it. Maybe you can do it. But you don't have to do it alone! you can get help. That's all seeing a therapist is - someone to help you get better. Someone who's there for you, and listens to you, and gives you tools to get better yourself, too.
So you don't NEED to seek a therapist. But if you're thinking about it and you can - it will be good for you :)
