Causes of depression vary from person to person but boil down to negativity. Anything that makes a person feel negative over either a long period of time or quick extreme negativity (trauma) can produce depression.
Opportunities to reduce the chance of depression include maintaining a positive lifestyle like removing things you are sensitive to from your life. Further, it's in the small things. Removing many small things that provoke a negative emotions totals up to one large thing.

Depression can have many different causes. It can range from a change in your life, such as a drastic change of house, to experiencing trauma, to just having a slightly different brain chemistry. There is no singular cause of this illness.
I, personally, suspect that my own is due to having a different brain chemistry that was triggered by a series of traumatic events at a young age.
Even if you feel you don't have a real reason to be depressed, you do. Your feelings are valid.

Depression is thought to arise from a combination of genetic and environmental factors (life experiences). Other things that can trigger an episode of depression include substance abuse and loss. Some medicines that your doctor may prescribe (like accutane, a treatment for cystic acne) can also precipitate depression.

Depression is very complicated. The reasons people suffer from depression are hard to place onto a single list. A significant loss, major lifestyle change, trauma or use of alcohol or drugs are just a few of reasons that could put you at risk. It is normal to feel sad every now and then, or to have a bad day, and this doesn't necessarily mean you are depressed. However, if you have lost interest in doing things you used to enjoy, or if you feel hopeless, or if you feel sad almost every day, this could be depression. It is best to talk to a doctor to know for sure whether something you are feeling is related to depression. This can either be a therapist, or you can ask your regular doctor for advice.
