They are not your friends. Sometimes people will latch onto those who they think can't stand up for themselves. Maybe they lack power in their own life, and are taking it out on you. Ultimately, that is not your problem, and the fact that they made it your problem is a sign they are not good friends. I can tell you from personal experience that mean friends are not worth it. Why spend your time with people who make you feel terrible? It may be hard to let go, but also know that there are many people in this world who are willing to be kind to you, and value your time in a way these friends do not.
