I think the first step is Acceptance. Accepting what happened, acknowledging where you went wrong. Accepting that you may never reconcile with the lost loved one. Accepting that it happened and you can't go back into the past and change. Then the next step is Learning. Learning what caused you to do that act. Learning how to do better in the future. Then the next step is forgiveness. Show yourself some empathy, you made a mistake, you've learned how to do better in the future. You're no longer the person who did that act, you've learned better and have grown as a person.
