You're wanting to prepare yourself for what may happen in the future! Everyone does it, and it's simply because as humans we're more interested in what may happen instead of what's actually happening.

I can't tell you why you do these things, maybe you need to look back and think about when this started.

Maybe you are trying to control too much of your life that you don't have control over. I would suggest meditating when this happens. Close your eyes and try to let go of any stress you may be having.

Perhaps you are anxious about the day to come. Perhaps you are excited. Either way, making a clear plan for the next day before drifting off to sleep can help put your mind at ease. Try building your to do list the night before, so you mind can stop running through possible ways to spend the next day.

Well it could be anxiety or excitement. Excitment needs no real explaination, when we are looking forward to our next day it's hard to sleep.
However if it's anxiety, then we are worried about what's going to happen. We feel unsafe, unsure and unsettled. The brain and body do not like to feel this way so it can cause you to wake up in order to "fix" the situation that is causing the fear and lack of safety, but in cases like this, there's nothing you can do at those times, but that's just how the brain works. To stop waking up, you need to address the worries and anxiety. which is a totally different question in it self.
