When you experience a break up, the natural thought progression is that *you* did something wrong. A break up is not always your fault, but because you, subconsciously, think it is your fault, you tend to believe that you aren't worth being loved by another person. You think that you don't deserve to be loved, because you take all the blame for the break up on yourself, and not at all on the other person.
