You shouldn't have to. However, if you are in a place where it would be unsafe to have an anxiety attack, you can practice diaphragmatic breathing and if your face gets red pick up a newspaper or look out the window or something to partially hide your face.

I've had a lot of experiences where I wished I knew the answer to this question! It's terrifying to think about having an anxiety attack, where you feel out of control and like everything is crashing down around you--and having one in public makes the anxiety seem to be almost three times worse! I've learned a few tricks that work for me: Grounding, where you place your hands on something solid like a table or your thighs, and the quick bathroom escape. My old therapist had some other ideas she was going to share with me, but things happened and I had to stop seeing her.

Hiding might not be the answer as it might make the anxiety worse. However, simply excusing yourself and going somewhere quiet and less crowded might benefit you more. Remember to breathe! For me, writing down my thoughts in a journal is enough to occupy my mind and to help me calm down when I have no one to reach out to; it all depends on what works best for you. You can even try different methods each time. Just remember that anxiety is an attack on the body from the brain. We feel as if we need to "fight" or "flee" when in reality, we're perfectly safe. It's an inner battle that although we might not be able to cure it, we can learn ways to better manage the anxiety.

If your unable to do that, try to take deep breathes, and try and distract yourself from whatever is causing the anxiety attack. If a certain situation causes an attack, don't be ashamed if you want to remove yourself from that situation, your safety and mental health matters a lot
