I know for myself when I was addicted to drugs, it was a way to replace something and to feel something. When I started doing drugs, I felt like I was overwhelmed and shut down emotionally. If I felt anything it was negative emotions. I rarely felt happy. The drugs allowed me to feel happy even though it was false. The alcohol and drugs numb the pain. Everyone's reasons for doing drugs vary, but when you get to the core of the reason it helps you to overcome the addiction and to find healthy alternatives to get the same results.

Why am I addicted? Because it is something that helps me feel different than depressed or anxious. I'm allowed to forget about what people expect from me and just be myself. I am allowed to be free. I feel free. I drink and I do drugs. I regret neither one. They have both helped me immensely through the years. Yes, addiction isn't good, but sometimes you need to be addicted to something other than self-harm, the number on the scale, or the calories you consumed. I'm addicted because I feel like myself when I'm on them.

I cannot answer why you have this addiction, as everyone has a different experience. However, a close family member struggled with addiction, and the reason stemmed from untreated depression. Many people use drugs to self medicate the pain of depression or other stresses. My family member sought out help from a therapist, as well as anti depressants, and this helped him find the strength to understand the cause of his addiction, and end it.
