Overly tired, sudden weight loss, lack of interest, defensive, won't tell you where they go, lies lies and more lies. Addicts become master manipulators and will make you question yourself. Follow your gut feeling, it never hurts to be too careful.

Of addiction, these signs would include personality changes, changes in behavior as exemplified by lack of motivation, irritability, and possible financial stress.
Other signs of drug abuse may manifest too, like tremors and slurred speech, bloodshot eyes and/or nosebleeds, a marked lack of attention to personal hygiene, and changes in daily routine.

I believe the number one sign of abuse or addiction is when you feel that you need the substance to get through the day when you start to take it to not feel any problems. If you are experiencing these signs I would seek help.

It really depends on the addiction. But for drugs or alcohol it's usually red eyes, dilated pupils, slurring of words,... or, really jittery, can't stay still. Picking at their body. It depends on if they are on an upper or a downer.
