The death of an animal is akin to losing a member of your family. They are members of your family. It is important to remember all of the joy and gifts that they were able to bring into your life in their time with you. There is a book that my mother used to read to me when we experienced a loss called “Badger’s Parting Gifts†which I still reference as an adult when coping with loss. The story reminds the reader of how much Badger brought into everyone’s lives in the spirit of celebrating their gifts. Your life has been enhanced by sharing it with this pet, and their presence will forever remain in your heart.
First of all, I am so sorry you experienced that! Losing a pet is a painful experience and you should not have to deal with the grief alone! As for coping, be sure to regulate healthy habits and make sure that you are eating, staying hydrated, exercising, and sleeping. It's beyond okay not to feel like yourself during times like this, and going back to memories with your pet may be both comforting and difficult for you. Rely on people in your family, or friends, that will listen and support you if possible. You are a strong, amazing person who deserves for people to have your back! I am so sorry for your loss once again, and know that you are cared for.
Definitely having to cope with a loved one or animal that you’ve thought special of is extremely difficult. However, if having the mindset that they are in a special place where they are happy brings a little calmness, then I hope you think that way. Although the space feels very big and empty, try filling that space with a hobby or activity that you enjoy doing. You can think of them from time to time but don’t be too sad or unhappy because of their passing. Also, getting to have people fill up the empty space can help too. They can help you get your mind off of the passing of the animal. I hope you are okay and don’t be too sad please. I hope you do better!
I've been through it, too. First, make sure you can express it in any shape. Whether that be reaching out a listener here on 7 Cups or one of your peers, that should be the top priority for your mental health. If you enjoy writing, then you can also write it out however you'd like. It can be through poetry, short stories, memoirs, etc. Then, set up a memorial with those fun moments you've had with the animal. You will most likely go through a ton of emotions while doing it, but it is all part of the healing process.
