Joan Zimmerman is a dedicated Marriage & Family Therapist (LMFT) with more than two decades of experience in her field, having graduated from Appalachian State University in 2003. She works compassionately with children, students, adults, couples, and families, employing a systemic perspective and various clinical approaches tailored to the unique needs of her clients. Joan often addresses family of origin issues and trauma-related concerns and skillfully incorporates expressive arts into her therapeutic methods. With a firm belief in the capacity of individuals to navigate their struggles, she strives to empower her clients to tap into their own courage, determination, resilience, and strength, guiding them towards the lives they envision for themselves and their families. Joan is well-versed in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), the Trauma Resiliency Model (TRM), and other trauma-informed practices, including somatic work. Utilizing modalities such as sand tray therapy and play therapy, she effectively addresses both mental health and substance abuse issues. To further enhance her therapeutic environment, her small lap dog, April, often accompanies her to the office, providing an additional layer of support and comfort, even though she is not a trained therapy dog.
