Mel Whalen Ph.d.

Mel Whalen, Ph.D., is a dedicated psychologist committed to a social justice framework in their practice. They have a passion for working with clients from diverse backgrounds, particularly those facing challenges related to chronic illness or dynamic disabilities. Mel's approach emphasizes collaboration with clients to establish realistic, attainable goals for treatment, ensuring a transparent therapeutic process. Known for their support of women and members of the LGBTQ community, Mel particularly enjoys working with individuals from marginalized groups. Being culturally Deaf and fluent in American Sign Language (ASL), they effectively serve many Deaf clients, while also connecting with hearing clients, as spoken English is their native language. The flexibility of virtual therapy allows Mel to provide services to Deaf teens, parents of Deaf children, Children of Deaf Adults (CODAs), and mixed Deaf-hearing families via Zoom. Additionally, Mel supervises new therapists and is available for training, consultations, and presentations on Deaf mental health topics. Their doctoral dissertation focused on transgender identity development, and many of their clients identify as queer, trans, LGBTQ, genderqueer, non-binary, or asexual.
