Located in Ansonia, CT, the Diabetes Prevention Program is dedicated to transforming lives through a comprehensive 12-week Intensive Lifestyle Intervention aimed primarily at low-literate and predominantly Latino communities. Every week, participants engage in a one-hour healthy lifestyle class, which incorporates the National Institutes of Health's curriculum on diabetes prevention. Our program emphasizes nutrition education and hands-on cooking demonstrations, utilizing fresh produce harvested from our garden, allowing participants to learn about healthy eating through experiential learning. Each week, 15-20 adults attend these informative sessions, which are complemented by a professional trainer-led exercise class, while children benefit from their own dedicated exercise classes and onsite childcare for infants and toddlers. Recognizing that diabetes affects the whole family, we encourage family participation, inviting relatives of our participants to join in these vital nutrition classes, reinforcing our commitment to fostering healthier families and communities.
