India

India, known for its vibrant culture and diversity, faces significant mental health challenges exacerbated by socio-economic factors and cultural stigma. The National Mental Health Survey reports that nearly 150 million Indians need mental health interventions, yet only around 30 million receive care, highlighting a 70-75% treatment gap. Economic disparities, rapid urbanization, and societal pressures contribute to the rise of issues like depression and anxiety, affecting approximately 60-70 million people or 1 in 7 individuals. Access to mental health services in India remains uneven, particularly between urban and rural areas. Despite these barriers, initiatives such as the National Mental Health Program and the Mental Healthcare Act of 2017 strive to improve mental health support in India by fostering community participation and integrating services into primary healthcare. Efforts to provide affordable mental health care in India are increasingly reliant on telemedicine and community-based services to reach underserved regions. These programs underscore the importance of making mental health resources in India more accessible. To fully address mental health challenges in India, continuous efforts are needed to reduce stigma and promote awareness. By exploring our directory, individuals can find local and national mental health support tailored to diverse needs, enhancing well-being across the country.

Serene Sarah George

Serene Sarah George

Bangalore,
MA in Psychology (Counselling)
After a stint at corporate finance, my lived experiences and interest in people and relationships brought me into the field of mental health care. As a therapist, my practice is anchored by a relational, psychodynamic framework and I believe in gently co-creating a reflective space and shared language with the people I work with. My view of therapy is insight oriented, reflective, collaborative and long-term. I rely on embodied experiences alongside working with the mind, and consider the social and political an inherent part of depth-work. I stay committed to learn and unlearn in both my personal and professional life and I consider it a privilege to be a part of another human being's story.

I believe therapy can be an effective medium for self exploration and mental well-being, provided we can nurture a meaningful therapeutic relationship giving the process the time and commitment it requires. I'm glad to see that you've chosen 7cups to share something very personal to you. This is a brave first step you have taken in committing to explore inward. I would be honored to be a part of your journey.

My pronouns are she/her and I'm of Indian ethnical origin. Among other things, I'm an ardent lover of music and creative writing has always been a form of authentic self expression for me.
