Sometimes its also nice to reiterate what they just said but word it differently. It shows that you are actively paying attention and listening to what they said.

For example:

Person 1: I'm so upset. My boyfriend and I just got into a huge argument.

Person 2: I'm sorry to hear. I see that you're upset because you just had a big fight with your boyfriend.

DeterminedOrange20, my sister decided to become a teacher, and nice comunication skills - that's what she started practicing, over and over again. Than she visit a summer camp called Institut Monte Rosa, which is maybe one of the most popular summer camps nowadays, where she could practiced with real people and real students. It helped her a lot, cause the real practical lessons are way more effective than theory.
