obviously the classics like charles dickens, sherlock holmes, jane austen, including dystopian authors like George orwell and aldous huxley.

Idk about your tastes though so ill just recommend the greatest author of all time: agatha christie. Idk exactly how she does it but every book of hers as me on the edge of my seat just asking "Who did it?" She's truly a genius.
