If you mean joining a subcommunity, once you've found a community you'd like to join, on the home page for that community there will be a button "Join this Community" that you can click on to join. For example:

Many communities also have a taglist where if you add yourself, you can get tagged in threads and receive a notification (yellow bell at the top right) whenever the community team creates something that they think the community will be interested in.
