Helping spouse through depression

ngalidolphin Saturday

I'm not sure how to ask this question but I'm looking for someone that may have attempted suicide in the past.

My husband has confided in me that he attempted a few months ago and failed and he has been really down lately and said his mind is all screwed up and he's really just unsure of the future. I'm trying to help the best I can.

Can someone tell me,if they feel comfortable, if they ever were suicidal how did they come out on the other side stronger? If you feel good now, how did you get to that point from being super depressed and suicidal?

How did you get through it? I'm just finding the best way to help my husband through this and be himself again if it means slowly if that makes sense and I want to speak to someone who has been there that has gotten better to see what there thoughts are being from that point of view. Thank you!

Escaping the darkest moments of our lives can be different for everyone. I think for me, it was a matter of survival and simply wanting to escape suffering rather than to die. I think it was a day by day matter at first. Getting through every day and going to therapy mattered a lot. Progress wasn't going to happen immediately in a day. It was in the little things; I would want to actually go outside one day or I would not be stuck in dark thoughts for all hours of the day. It was very a two steps forward and one step back journey.

I think at this moment, perhaps the goal is to just get through each day. Whatever keeps them going--whether it is something small or not--is what is important to remind him of. Gradually, as he is able to practice skills and develop a better relationship with himself (hopefully through therapy), things will slowly start to change.

It is very difficult to take care of someone who is dealing with such dark suicidal thoughts. I hope that you also remember to take care of yourself and give yourself patience in the process as well. I'm wishing you both the best.
