Does anyone have any tips on how to not procrastinate?

FloatingMapleLeaf64 December 18th, 2014

I'm freaking out a bitbecause exams are coming up and I have to get certain grades because my offers from university are conditional!frown

Also I was wondering does anyone have any experience with going to their school counsellors? I was thinking of seeing mine but I'm pretty nervous about it - the only way I've ever been able to talk about my emotions is on the internet ahahablush

What I try to do is make a to do list every Sunday. I put it on my dresser and that way I see it every time I'm in my room and can't put things in the back of my mind to procrastinate. I just recently started doing this and find that it helps to see it written out. You could also try making a schedule of each day and map things out that way.

I saw my counselors at school for having anxiety last semester. Personally, it wasn't for me but they were very helpful and didn't make me feel uncomfortable

Not sure if you're still looking for tips on how not to procrastinate but here's what worked for me in college.

Making a list I mean writing it down. Write down everything you need to do so you can see it all there. Then put a number next to each item, 1 being most important need to be done ASAP or but the day of the week it needs to be done by M for Monday for example. This helped me to see what needed to be done first. It also lets you know what to work on next. Like it the first thing on the list is just making you want to fall asleep then move on to number 2 so at least you're getting a head.

Do a little each day. Starting is always the hardest thing to do especially whenit comes to big projects or ones due a long ways away. Just each day do some of it, do the stuff you like first to get the ball rolling.

Also reward yourself. Make your favorite food for dinner as a treat or go buy yourself that $6 coffee when you've finished a big project. Positive rewards are always fun!

I hope one of these tips is helpful. Good luck!

If you can't stop checking your phone (like me), there is an app called Forest: Stay Focused. You set a timer for say 30 minutes and a tree begins to grow on the screen in that time. If you click the screen or go off the app the tree stops growing. It's a really sweet and effective idea,

Here's a trick: do the thing you are supposed to be doing for just 15 or 10 minutes. It's easy to commit to that length of time. Once your mind is engaged by a task it doesn't mind to continue so this is secretly a trick but if it doesn't work at least you get a small chunk of the work done, but it should work.Tell yourself just ten or fifteen minutes of work and go!

@ferret9125 This is actually very helpful! It's tricking your mind into doing something for a long time, but it works!

Something I do is tell myself that I'll do some revision for 5 minutes

I usually end up doing it for way longer once I've started, it's starting something that's the difficult part

Good luck
