Does anyone have any tips on how to not procrastinate?

FloatingMapleLeaf64 December 18th, 2014

I'm freaking out a bitbecause exams are coming up and I have to get certain grades because my offers from university are conditional!frown

Also I was wondering does anyone have any experience with going to their school counsellors? I was thinking of seeing mine but I'm pretty nervous about it - the only way I've ever been able to talk about my emotions is on the internet ahahablush

Seriously though, talking to you counselors sounds like a good plan, you?d be surprised what a good counselor will do to help you out, even if it?s just listening. One on one conversation face to face can be a bit intimidating but the rewards make it worth the effort. Just don?t put it off J

Good luck with your exams!

I saw a university counsellor and she was lovely but it didnt work out for me, only because she was not experienced with my kind of issue, but i still think it was worth a try. I hope your able to find the courage you need to try your college counsellor and i hope it goes well for you.

@floatingmapleleaf64, I too was embarrassed a lot about talking to counselor, much less, anyone else about my problems. I went to see mine to talk to mine after I lost two special ladies. My mom passed away last summer, then this summer, a girl I cared a lot about and almost married had passed away. I cant remember if it was our first or second session, but she asked me if I had ever been sexually abused. I know I had to have given her a funny look, because I couldnt believe she asked me that. How could she have known. The only two people that knew about that up until then was myself and my dad, who sexually molested me as a child. I all of a sudden was telling her all of the bad experiences in my life. I felt as though I could trust her, that she would keep my secret. She is a great counselor. You should give it a try. It made me feel better to be able to get everything out.

There's a couple of things that I find help.

1. Make a timetable of what you are going to do, when you are going to do it, but remember to give yourself breaks.
2. Make sure that you have snacks and a drink with you before you start to revise.
3. Remove temptations e.g. take away your computer and just listen to music instead.
4. Get your friends to text you every so often to make sure that you are getting on.

I hope this helps. Good Luck.

My dad pointed out that when he starts to procrastinate, he'll do dishes, or something not fun. It forces him to do serious work instead of screwing around.

Aww Exams! That time of the year again. But I wish you all the best! You can do this.I procrastinate too so I know how stressful it is.But there are thing that help! Try to print out a picture of your dream job or university and keep that in mind. Also you can try rewarding yourself if you do things early. One thing that I find that really works is making a to do list. But make sure you be specific and put times. Also breakdown your big task into small tasks.Remember to take a break every once in a while too.For example:If I have an essay I will take an hour for each paragraph and after I am finished each paragraph I take a 30 min break. It actually isn't wasted time.It gets your brain to cool off and to calm down.I sometimes even think of more ideas on my break. The reason why we sometimes put things off because the task seems too daunting, or impossible. But this helps to make it seem more doable. :) I hope this helps in anyway!

I struggle a lot with procrastination, and this article and the associated graphics have helped me immensely. I actually use the picture of the dark playground as my desktop background whenever I feel like I'm not being as productive as I should be. I cannot recommendthis enough, it's a really great way of thinking about procrastination, and accepting its role in your work process.

Chronic procrastinator here -- though I like to say that I'm just too busy all the time. :P

I saw a great tip online once that will prevent you from realizing you don't know how to do an assignment and then scrambling/feeling stupid: as soon as you get an assignment, try to do the best job you can of it in 5 minutes, as if you had to turn it in at the end of the 5 minutes. This forces you to skim the assignment, try every part just a little, and realize what you don't know how to do and gives you an idea of how much time it will take. Then the next day, you can ask questions or at least be prepared and know it'll take 3 hours, not 30 minutes!

Other than that, sometimes you have to consider the reason you procrastinate. For me, it's not being able to start working and getting distracted easily. That's usually solved by forcing myself to start, setting a timer, or going to a cafe/library. What's your reason?

If you have difficulty with procrastination, I would try setting mini-deadlines by telling your friends that you will have (x part of project) done by a certain time. If you tell someone that you are going to do something, you are more likely to do it! It's worth a try, at least!

Seeing a counsellorsounds like a great start, though!

I found that making myself a little timetable helped. On an excel spreadsheet I did the whole week, 24/7, wrote down my sleeping patterns, any regular TV shows or places that I go, and then between the time that was left I shared out time to do my coursework and time to do whatever I wanted. I've worked out that I should do around 20 hours of work a week, and still have time to do everything that I want to do.
