DEPRESSION WHILE STUDYING - AND HOW IT AFFECTS YOUR PROGRESS

A good technique for studying with depression is something called the ‘Pomodoro Technique. It is a helpful technique as it teaches you how to pace yourself collectively through your work and assessments. This can ease your stress and reduces your feelings of being overwhelmed through scheduling and specific time management.
This technique is extremely useful as when we are depressed, we cannot focus correctly. We tend to think negatively, or we lose track of what we should be focusing on.
This technique helps our energy progress slowly and effectively.
The Pomodoro Technique has the following steps to study whilst experiencing depression.
- Decide on the task to be done.
- Set the pomodoro timer (traditionally to 25 minutes).
- Work on the task.
- End work when the timer rings and put a checkmark on a piece of paper.
- If you have fewer than four checkmarks, take a short break (3–5 minutes), then go to step 2.
- After four pomodoros, take a longer break (15–30 minutes), reset your checkmark count to zero, then go to step 1.
QUICK TIPS for depression:
- If you think you are depressed, see a counsellor or a doctor as soon as possible.
- Do what you can to keep your energy levels up by making an effort to eat well and exercise.
- Go to bed at night and get out of bed in the morning at the same time each day.
- If you aren't doing all the study you are supposed to, do the most important things first and talk to someone (eg; a counsellor or Unit Chair) about what is going on.
