Android 2.1.2

KrinkTheMellowUnicorn November 5th, 2015

I wanted to start a thread to talk about the upcoming app release and set expectations.

We are working hard (@ezraBC is working around the clock in particular) to get the updated app ready for the Play store. We may first make it available as a beta to work out the kinks.

On day one the app will not yet have everything we plan to add eventually

Here's what to expect at first:

- The app should be more stable (less crashing, fewer bugs, fewer needs to restart)
- The app should be more performative and snappy
- There will be access to your path
- There will be acccess to the feed
- Chat will be reskinned and updated a bit but not overhauled yet
- The forum will be reskinned but not changed functionally yet

Post the initial release we will continue to filter in improvements to the app, adding guide content and eventually reaching something close to parity with the website.

We're pretty sure that even at first the app will be a clear improvement over the old one, and that over time it will become amazing.

When we are ready to make the app available for download, either in beta or for the public in general, I will share that info here as well.

edited thread name again to highlight latest version. please try it!

yaaay that sounds great! ❤️ thanks for your hard work, especially the amazing @ezraBC !

Good to hear we will have access to the feed from the app and that it will crash less :)

I am very happy to hear this. I am especially excited about the access to my growth path. Thank you so much for everyone's hard work. We appreciate it.

Wow , it's just come out :o !!! It was a bit of a shock , but hopefully the app will be working much better than it used to soon ! I have already noticed one small problem though , when I go on the app , these boxes with some code/link come up and I have to cancel a number of them before I can see anything else , also it won't let me connect or PM a listener at the moment .

I'm sure it'll be AMAZING soon though ♥ thanks for your hard work !

Actually what you're seeing is stuff for the new app showing up in the old one I suspect.

Posted from the beta Android app...

@KrinkTheMellowUnicorn Yes, we have the old app shell in the new website app.7cups.com that causes a lot of errors at the time being (and there are already many design flaws and recurrent bugs from the old app I spotted)

KrinkTheMellowUnicorn OP November 7th, 2015

@Ace13

right, this is a side-effect of the testng of the new app and changes (both cosmetic and buggy) to the innards.

@ezraBC is aware of these conflicts and we hope to minimize them until the shift is complete.

I am going to start an iPhone thread too, since that app is affected already as well.

It's looking very good that we'll be able to publish the 2.0 android app a bit later today.

There are a number of known issues right now that I want to mention here to help set expectations. Remember that our standard for pushing this release is that it be clearly an improvement over the existing app (but not perfect!).

We think this one is much more stable and reliable and offers of course access to the growth path and the feed, but beyond that it isn't exactly where we want it to be yet.

Here are some known issues that we hope to fix soon following this store update:- Formatting of some dialog boxes is off

- Counters (for messages) on nav tabs not working yet
- Alerts & Notifications missing! (coming soon!)
- Some of the app is rminimally reskinned but does not have the final design yet
- The Me tab isn't really finished
- Most tabs only go one screen deep so far (and back is inconsistent)
- Keyboard sometimes covers where you are typing
- Bugs in progress path
- You can end up in the wrong tab
- Wellness test and video in growth not working on mobile yet
- Lots of small fit & finish things

@KrinkTheMellowUnicorn I'm kind of a bit lost right now, I still have the old navigation system, how can I access the feed from the app?

KrinkTheMellowUnicorn OP November 10th, 2015

@Ace13

We have not made the change yet. We are still in beta, but presuming we can get the last blocker fixed we expect to publish the 2.0 update in the Play Store later today and when you get that you should have the new navigation tabs and the html innards should behave better.

We are (knock wood) minutes away from publishing the new Android app (it may take a few hours to propagate to everyone's Play Store and/or device), and I wanted to reiterate that this is a work-in-progress with much work still to come.

With any launch or release it comes down to decisions about "blockers" - bugs or issues that may or may not be worth blocking the release to fix. There are always candidates but at some point you have to say "let's go for it and fix these later" and the point to do that is when you have something clearly better and ready for use.

I believe we are there but we have compromised (temporarily) on a lot of things. I mentioned many of them in my initial post in this thread. Just today we've had to basically freeze the Me tab which was misbehaving a bit, until we get it sorted over the next few days, and the process for logging out and back in again is a bit wonky but it should work adequately for now.

As we all start using the new app you'll no doubt find more problems, some we know about and some that will surprise us. We'll gather that feedback and continue both finishing the apps and making those fixes.

@KrinkTheMellowUnicorn first bugs I found is that when you click to repost, the pop up box asking you to choose between 7Cups feed and Your feed is displaying the HTML form code and there's no way to cancel your action, it will repost it to your feed no matter what. The other bug is that many posts appear blank, I'm trying to troubleshot the issue

Also, maybe autoscroll could be a nice option in the future?

Update: It seems the blank posts are pictures not loading

Other Bugs: -The path says I'm "3 growth points to next level" even if it isn't the case and that I sent messages since then

-community tab still has the old colors under the navbar

-community tab lags out and magically becomes another chat tabs

-missing notifications tab

-listener profile links do not open in the app -fixed

How so?

Other Bugs: -The path says I'm "3 growth points to next level" even if it isn't the case and that I sent messages since then

sounds like maybe @ezraBC left some placeholder text in there - will add to bug list thanks! (is this as a listener?)

-community tab lags out and magically becomes another chat tabs

that might have been from clicking a link? @ezraBC and I will need to know how to reproduce that.

-Path Bug: yes it is as a listener, definitely sounds like a placeholder since listener reputation is cheers

-Community tab bug: sounds like it always occurs after I leave the app then come back, I'll try to reproduce it perfectly a few times and will let you know

-autoscroll on feed: it would make it more genuine like other social medias

Hehe I found an Easter egg in the app:

If you swipe from the left of your screen you'll get a drawer that says "this is my left drawer!!!!"

Same goes for the right side cheeky

I still think there's an opportunity to turn these into something useful though (like the browse listeners page which is conspicuously missing)

@n0thing14 ahahah I saw the same, I wonder how we could use those, maybe notes or helpful links on one side? we are still missing an alert tab though maybe that could be the top drawer xD

Carrying on from the last message :p I saw those drawers things on the side too XD I really think they should be made into something proper , like notes or something , it would be great ! Also the one main problem I have is there doesn't seem to be a browse listeners page ! Overall I really like the new version of the app though , it should be AMAZING when finished :)

@2015ihope

there is a nice redesign of browse listeners coming for the app but even now it should be accessible with a reskin of the old design via the chat tab.

I had a bet going with @ezraBC about who would notice those.

These are placeholders (of course) for features to come. On the iOS side they can be added on the fly but the Android app needed some "empty pockets" for us to fill later.

you should be able to get to browse listeners through the Chat tab. If not that is a bug. But chat got a very light reskin so far...

@KrinktheMellowUnicorn Is the iphone app in the process of being updated? On the user side (a member mentioned this as well) we are seeing many changes, but without an official update. Is it normal to see changes when it hasn't been updated? The feel of the iphone app currently has the interface of the ne site design, but with lower functionality. Any answers you have to why we are seeing changes in the app would be greatly appreciated!

KrinkTheMellowUnicorn OP November 11th, 2015

@JustMe11

Yes, I started a separate thread to discuss the iPhone side of things, but I'm happy to fill in the gaps a bit here as well.

Right now, both our iPhone and Android apps share a common architecture that wraps a native app around a shared set of web-based tabs. (There are other ways to do these things, each with their pros and cons, but this is our current approach).

This means that updating the Android app for this week's release required us to update some of that common shared content. Most of the changes to content that already existed is cosmetic (different colors, etc.), and some of that is still in the process of being cleaned up and polished.

This has forced a partial update of the iPhone app. The update to the "wrapper" (the login, the navigation tabs, etc.) is currently awaiting review Apple's iTunes App Store. We plan to ask for an expedited review as soon as tomorrow as we work out a few final kinds on the basic app. (We got sidetracked today a bit by the botnet attack.)

So we hope to have the iPhone update out within the next week, ideally within a few days, and just as with the Android app, we then plan to finish the unfinished parts, fix the bugs, and go on improving things in an ongoing way.

Here is the list of bugs and stuff I found:

-I'm able to reproduce the magic tab glitch, it happens when I switch tab after leaving a chat so fast that the tab doesn't have the time it needs to load. I don't know if there's another way to reproduce it

-Profile pictures are not centered like on the site

-forum edit boxes often pop outside of the screen but not normal reply box

- unable to comment on reposts

-the pop up to chose between 7Cups feed and my feed is glitched as said previously and you can't cancel

- http:// pictures not showing up as we said

- recurring bug: unable to paste in 1-1s nor the rooms

-recurring bug: chatroom rules show warning type at the end of each rule + mods can warn for unexistant rules

-pulling right drawer is okay but the left drawer freezes the device for 5sec or so

Feedback:

-personally I would prefer if the feed posts button would be on the right so we can scroll in the middle

- I think auto-scroll on the feed would be a nice addition

-the multitask bar is still cutting off the 4th and/or 5th bubble on some device

- @krinkthemellowunicorn as we discussed, I think a message counter in the chat tab would be nice too

Will update this post as I find more bugs or other things

Please use this feedback form to submit bugs. You don't need to make a separate entry for each one, but this will ensure that we capture the feedback all in one place and can process it without losing info.

KrinkTheMellowUnicorn OP November 11th, 2015

@Ace13

at the same time public discussion is good too, so let me add what info I can:

I'm able to reproduce the magic tab glitch, it happens when I switch tab after leaving a chat so fast that the tab doesn't have the time it needs to load. I don't know if there's another way to reproduce it

and what is the result of this? what is the outcome?

Profile pictures are not centered like on the site

I noticed that too. There is an offset error of some kind. I have a theory about this...

known issues:
-forum edit boxes often pop outside of the screen but not normal reply box- unable to comment on reposts
-the pop up to chose between 7Cups feed and my feed is glitched as said previously and you can't cancel

- recurring bug: unable to paste in 1-1s nor the rooms
Is this always or intermittently. ( @ezraBC, I thought we fixed this one? )

-recurring bug: chatroom rules show warning type at the end of each rule + mods can warn for unexistant rules

we need to fix those dialogs asap

-pulling right drawer is okay but the left drawer freezes the device for 5sec or so

good to know

Feedback:

-personally I would prefer if the feed posts button would be on the right so we can scroll in the middle

noted

- I think auto-scroll on the feed would be a nice addition

how do you see that working?

- @krinkthemellowunicorn as we discussed, I think a message counter in the chat tab would be nice too

message counter definitely coming. this was a cut-corner so we could get the stable build out but as it is below parity with the old device it is a very high priority to fix.

@ezraBC was working on My Impact (the default Me tab for listeners) when he got sidetracked by the botnet attack. When that is set he will turn to the message counter and a list of other urgent things (many of them listed in my known issues above, or being discovered now).

the autoscrolling could simply be that when you hit the bottom of the page, it loads new posts automatically

I have updated the name of this thread to reflect the fact that we just pushed out a quick bugfix to the 2.0 Android version because we detected a lot of crashes on older phones. We believe this update will fix the problem without causing any other problems, but we will keep an eye on crashes and javascript errors and so on over the next few days and keep fixing anything that's affecting people.
