Deaf Listener??

Ocendade June 27th, 2017

Hey!

So I decided a while back that I wanted to be a listener. I've been super excited and I think I am ready to make my account. There's one thing holding me back. I AM DEAF. I have read through the page about becoming a listener and it said nothing about Deaf not being able to. I am hesitant though because this site isn't the most Deaf friendly. Many of the YouTube videos do not have captioning and those that do have captioning are often labeled with unreliable captions. Also, all of the mindfulness recordings are 100% unavailable to me because they rely completely on the use of hearing. I am Profoundly Deaf meaning I can't hear anything unless it is a Jet taking off beside me. Turning up the volume is not an option for me and I don't have a hearing aid or a Cochlear Implant.

The page about becoming a listener does not highlight any specific training methods to become a listener. For anyone who knows: how are you guys trained to be listeners? Is it something you read over? If it is a video, do you know if the captioning is accurate? If there is no captioning, is there a manuscript I could read to fulfill the same qualifications?

I would love to be a listener and I feel like I could help a lot if people, but I don't want to sign up for it, get my hopes up, and not be able to do it because I am Deaf. If anyone know I would be so grateful if you could help me out.

Thank you all so much for reading this and all you guys do for me.

@Ocendade

I don't see any reason why you can't be a listener because you're deaf. Listening on this website is all done via text, so it's all reading and typing which you don't seem to have a problem with.

There is a tab on the top of your screen that takes you to the learning section. There are trainings there but none of them are very helpful. They're all about understanding the topic you'll be listening about which is great but there is no training on how to be a good listener.

@Ocendade I know there have been Deaf listeners before. I don't know what level of hearing they had though. I would hope that there are no barriers related to the need to hearing anything.

I hope you do sign up, and if there are any issues that they can be addressed!
