"But they are family"

ninetaleslove June 26th, 2019

I'm sure many people have heard some variation of this phrase. Some sort of situation where a family member pushes you (intentionally or otherwise) into something you may not want to do otherwise.

Right now I have a situation where a family member made myself and my other half feel uncomfortable. However, he brought up "but they are family," and feels that we need to have to accomodate this family even though it's not logical for us emotionally or financially. Having someone be related to you through blood, marriage, etc doesn't mean you are obligated to do everything for them. Family relationships can be toxic like any other relationship. Don't let others guilt you into sacrificing your mental health heart

@ninetaleslove Agree. I'm also sorry you are going through that/went through that.

This is manipulation and guilt-tripping. I hate it and have it done to me, too. "Family" or friendship or other connections does not give the right to abuse or overrstep boundaries, etc.
